Top tips for saving water in the home:

  • Wash vegetables and fruit in a bowl not under a running tap and use leftover water for house plants.

  • When buying new kitchen appliances look out for ones that use less water and are energy efficient.

  • When boiling water use the minimum amount required.

  • Keep a bottle of water in the fridge instead of running the tap until it runs cold.

  • Don’t pre-rinse dishes before putting them in the dishwasher; all you need to do is scrape any leftover food into the bin.

  • Wait until the washing machine or dishwasher is full before you switch it on; this is more efficient that doing multiple half loads.

  • Try not to leave the tap running while you brush your teeth or shave; this can waste up to 5 litres of water per minute.

  • A 5-minute shower uses a third of the water a bath does. But power showers can use more water than a bath in less than 5 minutes!

  • Old toilet cisterns can use as much as 9 litres of clean water every flush. Reduce this by placing a ‘save-a-flush’ or ‘hippo’ in the cistern (United Utilities).

  • If you’re redecorating the bathroom consider a low flush or dual flush toilet to minimise water waste.

  • Replace worn tap washers; dripping taps can waste up to 4 litres of water a day.

  • Burst water pipes can cause serious damage as well as waste water. Ensure pipes and external taps are lagged in time for the cold winter months.

  • Wash the car with a bucket and sponge instead of a hosepipe.

  • Consider a water meter and only pay for the water you use. These are available from local water boards (United Utilities)
