Top tips for saving water in the home:

Wash vegetables and fruit in a bowl not under a running tap and use leftover water for house plants.

When buying new kitchen appliances look out for ones that use less water and are energy efficient.

When boiling water use the minimum amount required.

Keep a bottle of water in the fridge instead of running the tap until it runs cold.

Don’t pre-rinse dishes before putting them in the dishwasher; all you need to do is scrape any leftover food into the bin.

Wait until the washing machine or dishwasher is full before you switch it on; this is more efficient that doing multiple half loads.

Try not to leave the tap running while you brush your teeth or shave; this can waste up to 5 litres of water per minute.

A 5-minute shower uses a third of the water a bath does. But power showers can use more water than a bath in less than 5 minutes!

Old toilet cisterns can use as much as 9 litres of clean water every flush. Reduce this by placing a ‘save-a-flush’ or ‘hippo’ in the cistern (United Utilities).

If you’re redecorating the bathroom consider a low flush or dual flush toilet to minimise water waste.

Replace worn tap washers; dripping taps can waste up to 4 litres of water a day.

Burst water pipes can cause serious damage as well as waste water. Ensure pipes and external taps are lagged in time for the cold winter months.

Wash the car with a bucket and sponge instead of a hosepipe.

Consider a water meter and only pay for the water you use. These are available from local water boards (United Utilities)
