Intensive Farming

The Eden catchment is mainly agricultural with upland livestock farming giving way to more intensive mixed and livestock farms on the fertile lower Eden valley.

This kind of land use has environmental impacts on the river system and with the changes in agricultural policies, there has been an increase in farms with larger numbers of animals on fewer units.

The Trust visits farmers and gives advice on nutrient budgeting, waste management and general environmental issues. We have a strong working relationship with the agricultural community having carried out restoration works on over 200 farms and survey works on over 250.
